Svetlana at the Vegan Artsy Wedding Celebration in Long Island City
We were hired to play at the local Astoria block party event celebrating businesses and residents of this vibrant neighborhood. We were thrilled to learn than the Artistic director and producer of the event was so impressed with the sound of our vintage jazz band that she invited us to play at her vintage inspired wedding at the artsy Long Island City lofts.
At the time of the wedding Long Island City was not as developed as it is now and the wedding had a definite artsy vibe. LIC is mainly a residential and commercial neighborhood located on the extreme western tip of Queens, bordered by the East River and Astoria - and the venue was located in renovated artist studios, with giant windows, white painted open plan interior and toll 20 ft ceilings.
The bride and groom looked amazing in their vintage inspired attire – with an amazing tattoo just perching from under the lace of the bride’s dress and a vintage European style fashionable suit worn by the groom.
The couple wanted to keep the flow of the event relatively informal so there was not a grand entrance or first dance or a specific song list – just a tight group of close friends and family sitting around large tables in the white walled art studio overlooking the picturesque neighborhood, enjoying each other and the special event.
The event began with a civil ceremony officiated by a friend of the couple – and continued with a reception style delicious vegan dinner. During dinner the band played upbeat jazz standards for guests to mingle, chat, and greet each other. Everyone felt relaxed easing into the night - while the band kept that excited energy going! At times the band stand felt like stage at a jazz club, because the guests would frequently break into excited applause. As the evening was nearing close, the band continued to maintain elegant and vibrant atmosphere and the couple came up to the band stand to greet the guests and to thank them for attending the event. Even though no specific song was requested (and the band was officially released) we felt moved to play just one last song, and we chose a wedding classic “It Had To be You” – this is when the most timeless and elegant photos of the couple (featured in this blog) were taken. We read the moment just right – and it created a memorable magical moment we will all remember forever!
We love working with clients to create memorable celebrations - with the band size ranging from 2-18 pieces (duet to a small big band - to a full size ballroom big band). Such bands can provide the perfect ambiance for an intimate cocktail parties to filling a dance floor with swing dancers!
