Vintage Jazz Band for Unique Wedding in Long Island City
A few years ago, Svetlana and the Delancey Five were hired to share their unique vintage jazz sound with the crowd at an artsy Long Island City wedding. The story of how we earned the opportunity to play our vintage jazz music at this unique New York wedding is one we love!
We were hired to play at the local Astoria block party event in Queens celebrating businesses and residents of one of our favorite vibrant New York City neighborhoods. Once we finished playing our unique vintage jazz set, we were thrilled to hear that the Artistic Director and producer of the event was impressed with the sound of our vintage jazz band! She was so impressed that she invited us to play at her vintage inspired wedding at the artsy Long Island City lofts. How could we resist?
At the time of the wedding, Long Island City was not as developed as it is now and the wedding had a definite artsy vibe. LIC is mainly a residential and commercial neighborhood located on the extreme western tip of Queens, bordered by the East River and Astoria. The unique Long Island wedding venue was located in renovated artist studios, with giant windows, an open plan interior painted white and tall 20-foot ceilings.
The bride and groom both looked gorgeous in their vintage inspired attire. The bride's look was uniquely stunning, with her vintage-style wedding dress that just showed her incredible tattoo peeking out from under the lace. The groom wore a very fashionable vintage European style suit.
The couple wanted to keep the flow of their vintage inspired wedding relatively informal, so there was not a grand entrance or first dance or even a specific song list. Instead, this intimate wedding included a tight-knit group of close friends and family sitting around large tables in the white-walled art studio overlooking the picturesque neighborhood, enjoying each other's company and sharing in the love felt at the special event.
The Long Island City wedding began with a civil ceremony officiated by a friend, and continued with a delicious vegan dinner served reception style. During dinner, the band played upbeat jazz standards while guests mingled, chatted and greeted each other. Guests relaxed as they eased into the evening, but the jazz band kept that all that exciting energy going! At times, the bandstand felt more like stage at a jazz club, because the guests would frequently break into enthusiastic applause. As the evening neared its close, the band continued to maintain an elegant and vibrant atmosphere. At one point, the happy couple took to the bandstand to greet their guests and to thank them for sharing their special day. Even though no specific song was requested (and the band was officially released) we felt moved to play just one last song, and we chose a wedding classic “It Had To be You.” While the final song of the night played, some of the most timeless and elegant photos of the couple (featured in this blog) were captured. We read the moment just right, and it created a memorable, magical, musical moment we will all remember forever!
